Have you ever thought that we all need a reservoir of strength and resilience to have plenty to draw from?

Shipping organization’s staff have to deal with personal or professional challenges and decide effectively in an industry heavily regulated to ensure safety.There is no doubt that professional resilience means a lot for maritime.

But, which are the capabilities, skills, and self-care practices that contribute to it?

Resilience involves the capacity to maintain healthy functioning and optimum performance, despite stressful conditions. It involves accepting and dealing calmly and effectively with unexpected or stressful situations. Humans are characterized by the ability to absorb changes and different approaches and situations, which change the current state of their emotional, physical or working environment.

As a definition, resilience is the ability of a system to adjust its functioning prior to, during, or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain required operations under both expected and unexpected conditions. Being resilient means remaining a thriving enterprise despite the emerging challenges. Specifically, this ability to bounce back is the ability to bend instead of breaking when under pressure or difficulty.

In other words, resilience is a core competency for stress management! The term can be defined also, as the ability of being aware of your situation, your risks, weak points and potentials to deal with them and make strategic decisions.

Resilience is an individual’s ability to adapt positively to pressure, setbacks, challenges and change, to achieve and sustain peak personal effectiveness. Resilient people won’t wallow or dwell on failures, but quickly acknowledge, learn and move on from them. Evidence shows that high levels of resilience can deliver valuable results for individuals. E.g. quick to solve problems, reduced stress, improved work performance, developed positive attitudes and sustained high levels of well-being and happiness.

This training session will comprise of the following sessions:

  • Change is a Part of Living. Identify the ways you manage stress and build your resilience with strategies to develop resilience in yourself and others
  • Looking at Situations in a Different Way. Examine your experience of emotions to improve well-being and organizational effectiveness
  • Take Care of Yourself. Explore why you feel the way that you do in difficult situations and how your emotions impact upon your performance
  • Take Decisive Action
